The specialty of thoracic surgery is concerned with diseases that affect all organs located within the thoracic cavity except the heart, which includes the lungs, mediastinum, esophagus, and diaphragm (the main muscle of breathing that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen), and chest wall surgeries.

This surgical department works closely with other medical specialties to help diagnose and treat diseases of the chest and esophagus.

Thoracic surgery is performed using several techniques, such as open surgery or modern techniques such as thoracoscopy (VATS), through small incisions of 10 mm or 5 mm.

Thoracic surgery specialty includes the following

Chest wall

· Treating rib fractures resulting from accidents and trauma and their complications such as bleeding, lacerations or lung contusions, stabilizing loose fractures with metal stabilizers to reduce the use of respirators.

· Correcting congenital deformities affecting the chest wall using metal bars through thoracoscopy (Nuss Procedure.

· Removal of malignant and benign tumors affecting the chest wall.

· Treating rib cage deformity without surgery

Pleural membrane or pleura

· All diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for pleural diseases, that is, diseases that affect the pleural membrane, such as purulent inflammation and malignant or benign tumors.

Lung

· Removal of malignant tumors, whether by open surgery or by thoracoscopy.

· Treating benign diseases such as canine cysts, recurrent pneumonia and emphysema.

Mediastinum

· All diagnostic procedures through mediastinoscopy techniques

· Resection of malignant or benign mediastinal tumors

· Thymectomy for patients with myasthenia gravis (a disease resulting from a defect in the normal communication between nerves and muscles)

· Thoracic sympathetic nerve transection operations for patients who suffer from hyperhidrosis of the hands referred by dermatologists.

Trachea

· Dilation of tracheal stenosis by bronchoscope or balloon technique

· Surgical removal of tracheal stenosis.

esophagus

· Operations to open the constricted esophagus resulting from esophageal muscle tension using an endoscope.

· Resection of esophageal tumors
